FIRST GRADE GUIDED READING
Each child was given a reading assessment to determine his/her current placement on a Guided Reading level. The books we read are structured to support a beginning reader’s skills. The story to be read is introduced, and unfamiliar or difficult words are pointed out. The children are asked to preview the book and then the group reads the story together aloud. The next day the children have the opportunity to re-read the book by themselves. The teacher then guides the discussion of the story. I meet with each group of 3-5 children four days a week. But we read everyday.
On Fridays, we have a dictation lesson, Weekly Reader, and work on grammar skills SKILLS/CONCEPTS THAT MAY BE REINFORCED TO ENSURE FLUENCY AND COMPREHENSION INCLUDE:
Pointing to the first letter of each word as they read
Finger spelling and sounding out the words they do not know
Using picture clues Identification of characters, setting and plot
Sequencing the events of the story
Identifying what happened in the beginning, middle and end of the story
Re-telling of the story
Making inferences about the characters
Summarize the story in a few sentences
THE ABOVE SKILLS ARE DEVELOPED AND BUILT UPON THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
